Patient Advocacy Grant
The ASC has had an increased emphasis on public education and awareness, and understanding of the need to adopt early detection practices – especially women regarding cervical cancers. The ASC Foundation awards one Patient Advocacy Grant ($10,000) annually for ongoing or new projects for advocacy efforts for patients with gynecologic and other cancers, or to educate patients on the need for effective screening programs.

State and Regional Organization Meetings Grant

Basics of Billing and CPT Coding in Cytopathology Laboratory

August 25, 2015

Swati Mehrotra, MD
Associate Professor
Loyola University Medical Center
Maywood, Illinois

Cytopathology laboratories process a variety of specimens and provide critical information to clinicians in a timely manner. Optimal reimbursement for services provided is dependent on accurate coding of cytology reports. CPT coding of cytology reports can be frustrating and difficult at times. In the present era of declining reimbursements, suboptimal coding could lead to potential loss of revenue. While several pathology groups employ certified professional billing services to deal with claims filing and management, a basic knowledge of CPT helps streamline the process. In addition, proper report documentation improves claims processing while reducing denials.
This webinar explains the basics of CPT coding in cytology laboratory. The target audience includes practicing pathologists, cytotechnologists and trainees. A vignette based approach will be adopted to discuss the nuances of CPT coding of cytology reports. CPT codes are assigned a Relative Value Unit (RVU), a value often used as a measure of physician productivity. RVU’s linked to cytology CPT codes will be addressed. The participants will also be made aware of recent changes in CPT coding, which took place as part of CMS’s National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI). In the end, emphasis will also be on proper report documentation.
At the conclusion of this webinar, the participants will become familiar with the nuances of CPT coding and recent changes to the process. They should be able to modify their practice, implement any required changes and in turn optimize their collections.

The Italian Society of Pathology and Cytodiagnostics-Italian Division of International Academy of Pathology (SIAPEC-IAP), jointly with the Italian Society of Cytology (SICi), has the great pleasure and honor to organize the 39th European Congress of Cytology, on behalf of the European Federation of Cytology Societies (EFCS).

It will be held in Semptember 20-23 2015 in Milan in the Centro Congressi di Milano (MICO) during the 2015 Universal Exposition EXPO, which will offer visitors a veritable journey around the world, through the cultures, histories and innovations of over 140 participating countries.

The focused scientific program of the Congress will handle all the aspects of cytology from A to Z.

Highlight of 39th ECC will be: innovative technology in cytology, cytology in multidisciplinary context, quality control, quality assessment and improvement, requirements for training cyto-technicians and pathologists.

It will be a unique opportunity to reach expert cytopathologists coming from every part of Europe and beyond, and several specialty audiences in one location.

In addition to the most recent advances of the art, several practical cytology issues will be addressed in a number of workshops and slide seminars.

I am sure that the participation to this event will give the opportunity to spend days of intense and constructive work with the possibility to establish new scientific collaboration and new friendly interaction.

I wish to everyone willing to participate an interesting and pleasant stay.

See you in Milan.

Smartphone Applications in Cytopathology

September 22, 2015

Mohi Ghofrani, MD, MBA
Director, Cytopathology & Women’s Health
Peace Health Laboratories
Vancouver, Washington

These days many tasks, from the mundane to the exotic, have been simplified by a myriad of smartphone applications that take advantage of the numerous hardware components housed in these small handheld devices, so much so that the catchphrase “there’s an app for that!” has become ubiquitous. This presentation will review how smartphone technology may be utilized in day-to-day cytopathology practice, either by taking advantage of existing apps, or by developing an innovative idea into a novel application.
