ASC Foundation Patient Advocacy Grant
The American Society of Cytopathology launched its philanthropic initiative in 2002 with the inauguration of its Foundation. The ASC Foundation has been dedicated to funding the non-operational costs of the Society to assure fiduciary responsibilities to the mission, membership and public as it insures the Society’s financial stability. The ASC Foundation has focused its mission on funding activities in Education, Advocacy and Research.
The ASC Foundation currently supports an Investigator Grant, a Patient Advocacy Grant, Annual Scientific Meeting Travel Scholarships and an Annual Scientific Meeting Abstract Award.
ASC Foundation Patient Advocacy Grant
The ASC has had an increased emphasis on public education and awareness and understands the need to adopt early detection practices – especially for women regarding cervical cancers. The ASC Foundation is funding a Patient Advocacy Grant that is available to ASC members, patient advocacy groups and neighboring societies. Patient Advocacy Grant ($10,000), awarded annually, is for ongoing or new projects for advocacy efforts for patients with gynecologic and other cancers, or to educate patients on the need for effective screening programs.
Topics for the grant should support ongoing or new projects for advocacy efforts for patients with gynecologic and/or other cancers.

Below are general instructions and criteria for the ASC Foundation Patient Advocacy Grant.
- The Patient Advocacy Grant is open to all members of the ASC, patient advocacy groups and neighboring societies.
- Purpose of Proposal (no more than two paragraphs). This document should allow the ASC Foundation Board to determine the purpose of the grant, for which patient population and total cost of the proposed effort.
- Specific method(s) of delivery of Proposal (no more than one paragraph). This paragraph should allow the ASC Foundation Board to determine the monetary impact of the grant and how the money will be used.
- Estimated number of patients impacted by Applicant (no more than one paragraph).
- Reason for Proposed activity as opposed to another volunteer activity or advocacy effort (no more than one paragraph). Based on this paragraph, the ASC Foundation Board should be able to determine the commitment of the applicant to a patient group, population or area of need.
- Other Patient Advocacy efforts that Applicant has accomplished in his/her lifetime (one paragraph). This paragraph should allow the ASC Foundation Board to determine competency to carry out the task proposed by the Applicant.
- A budget detailing the anticipated annual expenditures during the grant period. There are no a priori restrictions on the utilization of the grant, except that the grant should not be used to pay indirect costs. The budget should include: a) total salary support for the applicant (following institutional guidelines for individuals at a comparable level of training); b) any sources of funding other than from this grant; and c) the assurance that adequate equipment and sufficient supply funds will be available to permit successful completion of the proposed project.
- Two Letters of recommendation from individuals or mentors who are familiar with the applicant’s potential.
- Letter from applicant explaining why he/she should be considered for the Grant.

The selected proposal will be awarded at the ASC Annual Scientific Meeting in November.
Grant awardee(s) will be required to present a progress reports of their patient advocacy work in the form of an article for a future edition of The ASC Bulletin.
All applicants will be notified of the Foundation Board’s decision in September, 2013. The grant awardees will be announced at the 61st Annual Scientific Meeting in Orlando, Florida
