The Papanicolaou cervical cancer screening test has made a significant contribution to the reduction of human cancer.
As the leading national organization promoting and advocating for cytopathology, the American Society of Cytopathology endorses the screening of women for cervical cancer as well as introduction of HPV vaccination in those populations that are at risk for developing cervical cancer due to exposure to high risk human papillomavirus. Vaccination and screening optimally occur in two distinct populations; vaccination in sexually naïve individuals and screening in HPV exposed populations. The American Society of Cytopathology endorses world wide screening for all women, using the Papanicolaou test, or other appropriate technologies in conjunction with HPV vaccination to prevent, detect and reduce cervical cancer.
