Directors:

Larry S. Fowler, M.D.

This seminar is open to cytotechnologist and cytopathologist educators as well as anyone else interested in cytopathology and cytotechnology education.

Once again we will offer a combined session for all educators in the morning. We will begin with a presentation on program structure for Canadian programs in cytology.  There will be discussions on job outlook and employer expectations for cytotechnologists lead by Indra Balachandran Ph.D., SCT(ASCP). Barbara Benstein, will lead a panel on discussions of program enhancements, looking at programs that are moving to Master’s levels, or in the planning process of making significant additions to their programs. Sandra Giroux, M.S., SCT(ASCP)  will lead a discussion on how to incorporate the automated screening technologies into programs.

Separate afternoon sessions will offer cytotechnologist educators the updates from the ASCP Board of Registry and the Cytotechnology Programs Review Committees (CPRC). The CPRC will focus on the self-study. We will also have some time for discussion of hot topics in cytotechnology education.

The resident/fellow educators will be offered updates on requirements for cytopathology training – both for residents and fellows. A session on competencies and outcomes assessment requirements for cytopathology fellowships will follow.

The groups will then come back together for the final topic of teaching management for all levels.

Educational Objectives:

  • provide opportunities for educators to network and share innovative education practices
  • provide an opportunity for cytologists to discuss relevant issues affecting trends and the future direction for cytology education
  • provide updates from the ASC Cytotechnology Programs Review Committee on new initiatives and guidelines
  • provide updates from accreditation and certification organizations including the ASCP Board of Registry, American Board of Pathology, and the Pathology Resident Review Committee on changes that impact cytology education
