Continuing Education Activities

The ASC recognizes the need to quickly integrate evolving basic science insights and experimental/newly available techniques into research and clinical practice.  To meet the educational needs of its constituents, the ASC has developed an ambitious set of integrated educational programs.

In Person

Annual Scientific Meetings
The ASC Annual Scientific Meetings have been held since 1953.  More than 800 participants attend annually to keep abreast of the dramatically changing cytopathology arena.  They recognize that ASC Meetings provide a high quality forum for the continuing education of the professional cytopathology community. (CME/CMLE/SAM credits available*)

Online

Case Studies
Case Studies provide an interactive distance-learning experience to interesting cases in the field of cytopathology.  Each Case has objectives, multiple images and a clinical history, along with a multiple-choice diagnosis followed by discussion, review images and references. (CME/CMLE/SAM credits available*)

eJournal
As the only online pathology journal club, the eJournal reviews the most current literature in cytopathology by today's foremost experts. View an article from a recent issue of respected peer-reviewed journals, and review the article's key points and clinical implications each quarter of the year. This is a great self-assessment, teaching and continuing education tool. (CME/CMLE/SAM credits available*)

Archived Cytoteleconferences
The ASC provides selections of the Cytoteleconference Series as links with provisions for continuing medical education credits.  These materials are appropriate for physicians and technologists actively involved in the field of cytopathology. (CME/CMLE/SAM credits available*)

Over the Phone

ASC Cytoteleconference Series
These sixty-minute multi-media teleconferences address the broad spectrum of cytology practice.  Reference materials are provided as is a Question & Answer session with each presenter.  Initiated in 1983, this series was designed primarily for rural hospitals.  The network has since expanded to over 100 hub sites in both rural and major metropolitan areas. (CME/CMLE/SAM credits available*)

*SAM credits are available on select Annual Meeting Sessions, Archives, Case Studies and/or eJournal.

The ASC is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to
provide continuing medical education for physicians.  These activities have been approved for
AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM.

The ASC designates activities for Continuing Medical Laboratory Education (CMLE) credit hours.  The
CMLE credit hours meet the continuing education requirements for the ASCP Board of Registry Certification Maintenance Program.  Credit hours have also been approved for cytotechnologists licensed by the states of California and Florida (only worth half the assigned credit hours).

These products can help fulfill the CME requirements and Self-Assessment Modules (SAMs) mandated by the American Board of Pathology Maintenance of Certification (MOC) process.*
