Required Continuing Education Credits for Cytotechnologists
CT(ASCP) Certification:
Participation in the ASCP Certification Maintenance Program is required for individuals who were certified as cytotechnologists on or after January 1, 2004. The ASCP Certification Maintenance Program requires a total of 36 points documenting continuing education or continuing competence activities over a three-year period following certification. One (1) point must be in the category of safety, two (2) points must be related to the specialty of cytotechnology and the remaining points (33) can be in the area of cytotechnology, management, education or other related laboratory area of interest.
SCT(ASCP) Certification:
Participation in the ASCP Certification Maintenance Program is required for individuals who were certified as specialists in cytotechnology on or after January 1, 2006. The ASCP Certification Maintenance Program requires a total of 36 points documenting continuing education or continuing competence activities over a three-year period following certification. One (1) point must be in the category of safety, ten (10) points must be related to the specialty of cytotechnology and the remaining points (25) can be in the area of cytotechnology, management, education or other related laboratory area of interest.
Note: ASCP certification expires after a three-year-period for individuals in the above categories who do not complete the required certification maintenance program. See the ASCP website (www.ascp.org) for more details about the Certification Maintenance Program and the voluntary program for individuals certified prior to the above dates.
CT(IAC) Certification:
Maintenance of IAC certification requires 180 continuing education credits for each 4-year period following date of initial examination.

New York: no continuing education requirement
Rhode Island: 36 hours of continuing education required every 2 years
Tennessee: 24 hours of continuing education required every 2 years
West Virginia: 10 hours of CE every year
