The AMA House of Delegates and the ASC

In order to best serve the cytopathology sub-specialty we must continue to be represented in all facets of the house of medicine, which includes the American Medical Association (AMA). Your membership in the AMA not only provides resources to you for your practice but also strengthens pathology representation in the AMA House of Delegates (HOD)—the policymaking body of the AMA—and allows us to have a collective voice through which we can bring forth the perspectives and interests of our specialty.

To activate your 2017 AMA membership, visit or call (800) 262-3211. To ensure our subspecialty is fully represented.

AMA member benefits include:

DynaMed Plus®, is the evidence-based clinical reference tool to get immediate answers to your questions, whenever and wherever you need them. AMA members can now get a free DynaMed Plus® 18-month trial subscription! After 18 months of free use, the individual physician member’s yearly subscription rate is $199, versus $395 for a non-member.

Unlimited access to The JAMA Network® which brings together JAMA and all 11 specialty journals with CME. Effective July 2016, the JAMA Network will submit completed activities monthly to the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to grant ABIM MOC credit. The initial submission to ACCME will include courses completed between October 1, 2015 and May 31, 2016. No action is needed for physicians who would like to have their completed JAMA Network CME courses submitted to ACCME.

STEPS Forward™, the AMA’s new practice transformation series designed to help physicians achieve the Quadruple Aim: better patient experience, better population health and lower overall costs with improved professional satisfaction. To confront and reduce the effects of physician burnout, the AMA’s Steps Forward series now includes a wellness-focused program with an organizational assessment of physician burnout levels, virtual and in-person mentoring and solutions that are designed to enhance your professional satisfaction.

AMA preferred provider offers and services from Mercedes-Benz®, UPS®, Henry Schein®, Hertz® and many more.

Currently ASC maintains our influence in the AMA through a delegate and alternate in the House of Delegates, an advisor and alternate to the Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC), an advisor and alternate to the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) Editorial Panel, we have representation in Pathology Section Council. All of these seats give ASC direct access to and influence in policy making, graduate medical education and physician payment issues. Without a critical mass of cytopathologists belonging to the AMA, we cannot maintain these positions of influence.

Please consider joining the AMA. It is through our active representation in the AMA that our specialty has an impact on the significant changes taking place in our health care system. Strong representation in the AMA allows us to have a collective voice through which we can bring forth the perspectives and interests of our specialty. Through the Pathology Section Council and other representation, we make the AMA a better organization. Your membership in the AMA strengthens ASC’s representation in the AMA’s decision making bodies.
